The Provincial and State Papers of New
Hampshire - 40 Volumes
INTRODUCTION
This project purports to be a consolidation of all indexes in the forty
volumes of The Provincial
and State Papers of New Hampshire. Published between 1867 and 1943, those
volumes were edited
by Nathaniel Bouton, Isaac W. Hammond, Albert Stillman Batchellor, Henry
Harrison Metcalf, and
Otis Grant Hammond. They are an invaluable source of New Hampshire history
and have in recent
years been made available worldwide on microfilm and on CD-ROM. The project
has utilized the
indexes as printed at the end of each volume, with the exception of volume
IX as noted below. A
longer-range goal is enhancement into a more detailed subject index to
reduce the number of simple
strings of page numbers.
The compiler encountered the fact that volume IX is indexed according to
last name only. It is
the only volume so indexed. To bring volume IX into compliance with the
other thirty nine volumes,
several people have worked with the compiler in ferreting out first names to
put with the surnames. For
this help the compiler is forever indebted to Brian Nelson Burford, Marilyn
Christie, Robert Christie,
John F. Page, Mica Stark, and Douglas Gourley.
The project utilizes a simple wraparound plan of volume and page listing
behind each entry. In
cases where subject and surname are the same, the subject is generally
listed first [thus, Rindge, NH
precedes Rindge as a surname]. The volumes consist of roughly 33,000
printed pages and an untold
number of index entries. In a project of this magnitude errors are bound to
occur, for which the
compiler accepts responsibility. If an entry looks odd, the user is
encouraged to check it against the
original index at the end of each volume.
The project has been a dream of the compiler for nearly thirty years since
first consulting these
volumes in 1974 as editor of The Papers of Josiah Bartlett for the New
Hampshire American
Revolutionary Bicentennial Commission and the New Hampshire Historical
Society. The project was
actually begun on October 27, 1996, and completed, essentially, on February
25, 2004.
The general support and encouragement of many colleagues, friends, and
family have provided
the energy and time to complete this project.
